Contest opens to name Zolushka and Zavetny’s cubs

23 December 2016

The Bastak Nature Reserve has announced the start of a contest to name two one-year-old Amur tiger cubs of Zolushka (Cinderella) and Zavetny.

Everyone living in Russia is invited to take part in the contest. Each participant can submit up to three names. On 16 January, online voting for the best names will open. The results will be tallied up on 27 January, on the day of the reserve’s anniversary. More information is available on the nature reserve’s website.

Zolushka was found emaciated in southwestern Primorye Territory in 2012. She successfully underwent rehabilitation at the Centre for the Rehabilitation and Reintroduction of Tigers and Other Rare Animals (PRNCO “Tiger Centre”)  and was released into the wild in the Bastak Nature Reserve in the Jewish Autonomous Region the same year. In September 2015, the tigress gave birth to two male cubs. The father of the cubs is Zavetny. Images of the family were captured by camera traps in December 2015 for the first time.
