A female tiger cub, nicknamed Valentina, that was rescued from a trap in the Kavalerovsky District of the Primorye Territory has died of sepsis, according to Vladimir Vasilyev, head of the Primorye department for the protection and regulation of fauna.

The six-month-old cub got her paw caught in a small trap on February 14. Vets immediately removed two of the tiger's phalanges. The exhausted cub was taken home by a game manager from Ussuriysk, who named her Valentina. A week later her brother was caught and the animals were kept together by the game manager. In early March, the tigress began to recover.

"Some time ago the tigress' condition worsened. We suspected it was a viral disease. That diagnosis was not confirmed, and Valentina died. The autopsy revealed that the animal died of pulmonary edema caused by sepsis," Vladimir Vasilyev said.

He added that the tigress's brother has been taken to a rehabilitation centre in Alekseyevka. He is very active and feels fine. The animal is no longer in danger.
