A stylish image of an Amur tiger, created with the help of a sketch done by the St Petersburg illustrator Viktor Gausa, has been created on the wall of a 12-storey high block of flats in Vadivostok at 14 Chapayeva Street. It is about 700 sq. metres and was painted for Tiger Day.
In 2018, the Amur Tiger Centre came up with the idea to paint the image of the main symbol of Vladivostok and the Primorye Territory, the Amur tiger, on the facade of a building located at the entrance to the city. It took the next two years to make the sketch, as well as to coordinate the project with the city authorities and the people living in the block of flats where the painting now is to be found.
“We are delighted that we managed to bring our plans to life and now the so-called gate of our wonderful city is decorated with a painting of such a beautiful and graceful animal. It is gratifying that the predator managed to "settle" on a remarkable and noticeable city wall, where tens of thousands of people can admire it every day. When creating the image, we received a lot of flattering reviews about it from residents, which gives us reason to believe that it was a great gift for Tiger Day. Of course, as with any piece of art, there are probably those who did not like the image. I will not argue with them but just say: if you can do better – you are welcome, there are many free areas in the city for creating such art objects. We would like to express our special gratitude to the people living in the block of flats, the management company and the Vladivostok administration, who agreed to place the painting on this building,” said Sergei Aramilev, general director of the Amur Tiger Centre.
Tiger Day in Vladivostok is an environmental holiday marked in the capital of the Primorye Territory on the last Sunday of September since 2000 and received official status in 2001.
