The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment hosted a meeting of the expert section of the working group on Amur tiger protection and recovery. The event was attended by Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Yelena Panova and Deputy Head of the Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources (Rosprirodnadzor) Amirkhan Amirkhanov. The meeting participants reviewed the draft roadmap for the implementation of measures aimed at preserving the Amur tiger. This work is carried out by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment as part of the Environment national project and the Biodiversity Conservation and Ecotourism Development federal project.

The draft roadmap includes measures aimed at counting and monitoring the Amur tiger population, improving the legal and methodological framework of Amur tiger protection, preserving the habitats and feeding grounds of the species, monitoring the epidemiological situation in areas inhabited by the tigers, enhancing the effectiveness of protection efforts, preventing and resolving conflicts, and developing international cooperation.

The working group members paid particular attention to the digitalisation of Amur tiger conservation activities. In particular, the experts pointed out the need to create a single database to monitor the state of the Amur tiger population in Russia, with all the information on the current distribution, number, biology and environment of the tigers, as well as data on their habitats, including on the populations of the main prey of Amur tigers. Roszapovedtsentr of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment will manage the database.

The meeting participants also decided to update the Strategy for Amur Tiger Conservation in the Russian Federation. This work is to be completed in 2020.
