29 December 2019

At the end of December 2019, the Vice President of the Heilongjiang Academy of Sciences (China) and managers of the Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences held a meeting where they discussed the results of the three-year-long cooperation on the joint projects between the Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Heilongjiang Academy of Sciences.

During the implementation of the projects to assess whether the habitats in the Lesser Khingan mountain range in the Heilongjiang Province are suitable for restoration of the Amur tiger population, the scientists determined the key zones to be especially protected. The research was based on the data from the distant sound probes of the Earth followed by field verification during three seasons. The modelling also considered the current state of the feeding base on the territory in question.

Following the talks, plans for further work were outlined and documents signed to reaffirm that the joint research would continue over a period of the next three years.
