Moscow celebrates International Tiger Day

29 July 2019

From 27 July to 29 July, Moscow hosted events marking International Tiger Day. The Amur Tiger Centre was in charge of the festivities.

On Saturday, tiger-themed events were held in Zaryadye Park, located in the very centre of the city. Warm weather matched the festive mood. The park guests joined a tiger parade and enjoyed a concert at the Zaryadye amphitheatre. The Nature Centre screened documentaries about Amur tigers and held creative workshops. Entertainers wearing plush tiger costumes and face painters kept young guests busy.

On Sunday, a friendly match was held between two non-professional football teams, Tigers and Leopards, at the FC Strogino home stadium. Special Presidential Representative for Environmental Protection, Ecology and Transport Sergei Ivanov attended the game. Tigers won the match.

“I am grateful to the participants of today's match for taking time off their business and playing football in support of the conservation of wild cats, Amur tigers and Far Eastern leopards,” said Sergei Ivanov.

On Monday, 29 July, the Striped Express train was launched on the Serpukhovsko-Timiryazevskaya Line of the Moscow Metro. Passengers of the brightly designed train will learn about the endangered tigers and Russia’s efforts to save these rare predators.

“The goal is to draw public attention to the problem of tiger conservation. The metro is the most popular mode of transport. Given how many people use it every day this is a great way to show them that we have tigers in our country. Moscow also needs to learn to care more about the Russian nature and it does not matter that wildlife is far away,” said Andrei Shorshin, press secretary of the Amur Tiger Centre.

All the information inside the train is divided into sections on nature conservation, research, books, films, newspaper and magazine articles about Amur tigers, educational events and environmental courses available in Russia, as well as brief history of the Striped Express train and the Amur Tiger Centre.

International Tiger Day is celebrated annually on 29 July. This day was established at the Global Tiger Forum that took place on 21-24 November 2010 in St Petersburg and brought together heads of government and representatives of the 13 tiger-range countries.
