3rd Stocktaking Conference on the Global Tiger Recovery Programme takes place in New Delhi

4 February 2019

The 3rd Stocktaking Conference on the Global Tiger Recovery Programme took place in New Delhi, India, on 28-29 January. The event continued the process that began in 2010 at the historic tiger summit in St Petersburg, where the heads of government of 13 tiger range countries set a goal to double the global tiger population by 2022.

Participants in the meeting discussed managing and preserving the tiger habitat, preventing the illegal trade of tiger derivatives and improving measures to protect the tiger population. They noted that the tiger range countries have made a significant contribution to the implementation of the Global Tiger Recovery Programme, including in protecting the population and its habitat as well as expanding the network of protected areas, which allowed for increasing the total number of tigers in the wild. Russia, India, Nepal, Bhutan and Indonesia have made the biggest progress in this area.

The Russian delegation, namely Amirkhan Amirkhanov, deputy head of the Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources (Rosprirodnadzor), and Irina Fominykh, deputy head of the International Cooperation Department at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, delivered a report on the current tiger population in Russia.

Participants in the conference also decided to hold the second International Tiger Conservation Forum in Russia, and summarise joint efforts there. The forum will help strengthen Russia’s global leadership role in environmental efforts, and will draw public attention to wildlife conservation.
