Sergei Aramilev: Tiger population stabilised and increased

12 September 2018

Sergei Aramilev, general director of the Amur Tiger Centre, reported that the latest count of Amur tigers in Russia puts the population at 560–580 animals.

Aramilev also added that tigers in Russia will always be a rare species.

“We understand that due to natural disasters that took place many tens of thousands of years ago, tigers were isolated and had to live in extreme conditions, but they have survived. There will never be many of them here; it will always be a rare species. According to expert estimates, the remaining habitat can sustain 700 tigers: this is how many felines can live in harmony with humans at the current development level of the Far East’s south,” Aramilev said in an interview with RIA Novosti held as part of the Eastern Economic Forum. The forum is taking place in Vladivostok on 11–13 September.
