Ussuri Nature Reserve releases winter count statistics

19 February 2018

Experts of the Ussuri Nature Reserve have released winter count statistics held in December 2017 at the specially protected area. The routes covered over 190 km in the Komarovskoye (Ussuri District) and Suvorovskoye (Shkotovsky District) forestries of the reserve.

According to the data, the largest hoofed mammal group in the area is the sika deer. Scientists said this winter is good for many animal species due to abundant food provided by the Mongolian oak, the Korean pine and the Manchurian walnut. However, both forestries lack any traces of the musk deer, which is an alarming sign. Nor did specialists come across any Amur tiger paw prints, but camera traps did record the images of predators, which indicates that there are about three to five wild cats in the nature reserve.
