Hunter faces criminal case for killing tiger in attack

9 February 2018

On 28 January 2018, a hunter encountered an Amur tiger near the village of Shcherbakovka in the Olginsky District of the Primorye Territory. According to him, he was attacked while checking traps and had to kill the predator in self-defence. In addition, the hunter said that the tiger had been injured.

Having analysed the collected data, the police came to the conclusion that this version of the incident cannot be true, so a criminal case was opened under Article 258.1 of the Russian Criminal Code (illegal hunting of endangered species of wild animals included in the Russian Red Data Book).

The dead tiger was taken away from the crime scene for a forensic examination. All circumstances of the incident, including the hunter’s degree of guilt, will be established during the investigation.
