A monument to a hunting supervision officer was unveiled in Ussuriysk on 23 September as part of Amur Tiger Day.
The monument by sculptor Pyotr Chegodayev depicts a hunting supervision officer sitting on a log and holding a tiger cub in his arms. According to legend, the inspector saved the tiger cub after poachers killed its mother.
The monument symbolises the selfless service of hunting supervision officers who ensure order in the forest and fight against poaching, often at the risk of their own health and life.
“We started to pay tribute not only to nature, but also to people who protect it. We must understand and remember that these people work in difficult conditions. They are always at the forefront of nature protection, but they are often confronted by armed people, almost criminals,” Konstantin Chuichenko, chair of the Amur Tiger Centre Supervisory Board, said at the unveiling of the monument.
