Uporny dies in Khabarovsk Territory

14 March 2017

The tiger Uporny (Tenacious) has been found dead in the Khabarovsk Territory. Experts think that the predator died from wounds to his head and back caused by a brown bear attack.

Uporny was released into the wild in May 2015 at Tigrovy Dom (Tiger Home), after completing a course of rehabilitation at the Utyos centre as part of the special programme of Amur tiger research in the Russian Far East. Experts monitored the tiger using a GPS collar. On 17 February, the signal was lost, and in mid-March, researchers decided to visit the site from where the last signal was received: in the midstream of the right tributary of the Yulya River in the basin of the Gur River.

The body of the tiger has been sent for examination to determine the cause of death.
