On 11-14 October, employees of five Chinese nature reserves visited Land of the Leopard National Park in order to share, for the first time, information about tigers and leopards, obtained from camera traps in 2013-2015. The meetings were attended by staff of the Primorye Territory Department of Hunting Supervision.
Based on this information, the Land of the Leopard employees will perform a general analysis of the populations of these carnivores in the two countries, give each animal a general number, and issue an individual passport.
The experts discussed anti-poaching measures and noted that the protection of rare wild cats has greatly improved in China in recent years. Fan Jinfu, director of China's Hunchun Nature Reserve, had the following to say after the meetings: " We have taken a new step in our common important work. We saw that the number of tigers and leopards in Russia and China is growing."
During the meetings, the Chinese experts also said that the Chinese government had decided to create a national park in the Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces in close proximity to Land of the Leopard National Park, with an area of 1.5 million hectares.
The employees of the Primorye Territory Department of Hunting Supervision shared with their Chinese colleagues their methods for preserving the food supply for tigers and leopards in the border areas. The experts agreed to conduct ongoing joint monitoring of the ungulate populations.
Russian and Chinese specialists regularly organise joint meetings to discuss research on the rare animals. In September 2015, a meeting was held in Harbin to study cross-border movements of the Far Eastern leopard and the Amur tiger.
