Uporny the Tiger ready to make family

Uporny the Tiger ready to make family

8 September 2016

In late August, experts from the Hunting Committee of the Khabarovsk Territory Natural Resources Ministry and the Far Eastern Branch of the Amur Tiger Centre went on an expedition to Uporny’s habitat. Uporny is an Amur tiger that was released into the wild last year. According to data from Uporny’s satellite collar, he lives near the Gur River in the Komsomolsky District of the Khabarovsk Territory.

After scouting around one of the ridges, the researchers found traces of a ‘tiger wedding.’ It was determined that Uporny is making a family with a sexually mature tigress, which has already given birth to cubs. The experts decided to leave the GPS collar on the tiger’s neck for another 18 months to monitor the expected family.

Uporny was taken from the wild in autumn 2014 because he attacked some domestic dogs near Khabarovsk. The information on his interaction with other tigers since being released indicates the success of the rehabilitation programme at the Utyos Centre, which is important in settling conflicts between tigers and people.
