New photos of Amur tigers have been taken in the Bastak Nature Reserve in the Jewish Autonomous Region. A camera trap captured images of two yearling cubs born to tigress Zolushka and tiger Zavetny. Previously, the tiger family was photographed in December 2015, when the cubs were about 3-3.5 months old.
Experts determined that one of the cubs is a male from the snapshots. In the near future, the reserve will announce a contest to choose a name for the cub.
This is the only tiger family living in the Middle Amur Region, which is evidence that the predator’s population is recovering in this area thanks to the work of the Centre for the Rehabilitation and Reintroduction of Tigers and Other Rare Animals (Zolushka was reintroduced to the wild in May 2013).
The Russian Geographical Society and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) support efforts to monitor the Amur tiger population in specially protected natural areas.
