12 August 2015

An Amur tiger reached the banks of the Onon River in the Trans-Baikal Region for the first time in 20 years. The predator was seen in the protected area of the Sokhondinsky State Reserve eight km from the village of Ulkhun-Partiya.

Inspectors from the reserve and eyewitnesses spotted the tiger’s tracks near the river. They warned local residents about the threat and asked them to collect all information regarding encounters with the Amur tiger.

The reserve was established in 1973. It occupies the highest part of the Khentei-Chikoi Upland with the Sokhondo goltsy altitudinal belt. It is the habitat of over 1,000 animals, including snow leopards, manul cats, bears and sable.
