Russia’s Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Sergei Donskoi will visit the Primorye Territory from 13 through 16 June. During his trip, the minister will chair a number of meetings, including one to review the results of the Amur tiger count performed in the winter of 2014-15.
Mr Donskoi will also visit the Orlinoye hunting reserve, a government-run pilot project, and take part in discussing ways to support the Centre for the Rehabilitation and Reintroduction of Tigers and Other Rare Animals (Far Eastern red deer, spotted deer, roader and boar), which helps young tigers develop hunting skills and provides them with food.
The census of Amur tigers and Far Eastern leopards was conducted in February 2015, and covered over 150,000 sq m of the habitat of these wild cats in the Russian Far East.
The preliminary results indicated that some 510 Amur tigers are currently living in the area. The final results of the tiger and leopard census will be published in October 2015.
