Vladimir Putin visits the Zhelundinsky nature and wildlife reserve

22 May 2014

Vladimir Putin participated in an event under the Amur Tiger Programme to release rehabilitated tiger cubs back into the wild.

Three orphaned tiger cubs, which were released into the wild today, had been found in this area. The tigers – two male and one female – are around one and a half years old now, and are capable of living in the wild on their own. However, in the next year, they will be monitored with the help of satellite collars, which will automatically unfasten in 12 months.

The Amur Tiger Programme has been launched several years ago. The programme's objective is to study the distribution range of Amur tiger populations, the number and migration routes of these big cats in Russia and the way they use the landscape. For this purpose, special electronic collars with a transmitter are put on them to track their migration and prevent them from meeting with people. Currently, a group of tigers of all ages is wearing these collars.
