Students to help tigers during their summer vacation

19 May 2014

Starting 1 July, the Tiger student environmental crew, organised by the Amur Tiger Centre autonomous non-profit organisation, will start its work. The crew comprises 25 young specialists from Far-Eastern Federal University and the Primorye State Agricultural Academy.

Students from various departments will take part in preserving the unique fauna of the Primorye Territory and will work in the key habitat of the Amur tiger, the Sikhote-Alin Nature Reserve. For two months, the young specialists will be engaged in creating infrastructure, improving the unique biosphere reserve and laying new environmentalists’ trails.

The Sikhote-Alin State Nature Biosphere Reserve is located in the three districts of the Primorye Territory: Terneisky, Krasnoarmeisky and Dalnegorsky. The nature reserve features a unique nature complex which includes most flora and fauna species of the Russian Far East.

As part of preparations for work at the reserve, the students from the Tiger group climbed to the top of Mount Pidan. Each person who reached the peak left a signature in the so-called Book of Pidan. By climbing the peak, the young people demonstrated their readiness to live in the woods.

As of today, the Tiger group is complete, but there were many more people who wanted to take part than there were spaces. All of those who were unable to join the environmental group this year will have the opportunity to make their contribution to preserving the Amur tiger population next summer.
