Donskoi to consider formation of a national park in the Jewish Autonomous Region

11 February 2014

Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Sergei Donskoi has issued an instruction to the relevant department of his Ministry. Earlier, Governor of the Jewish Autonomous Region Alexander Vinnikov initiated a proposal on establishing a specially protected territory of federal importance in the region.

In his letter to Donskoi, Vinnikov cites arguments in favour of creating a national park on the area of 100,000 hectares. Russia's Far East has unique forests with various broad-leaved cedar and fir trees. These are the only forests in the region that are almost immune to anthropogenic influence.

The Pompeyevsky National Park is important for preserving the population of the Amur tiger, in connection with the increase in its habitat, and restoring the ghoral population, which once used to live in the region. The Pompeyevka River is a model habitat for salmanids (grayling, lenok and taimen). It is also the least susceptible to anthropogenic impact.

A national park in the basin of the Pompeyevka River and the Taipinggou national reserve on the other side of the Amur River will help form a transborder natural protection system.
