Rescued Amur tiger brought to a safari park in the Primorye Territory

6 February 2014

On 6 February, a rescued Amur tiger was taken to a safari park in the Shkotovsky District of the Primorye Territory, but it has not come out of its cage, park director Dmitry Mezentsev said.

Inspectors found the injured animal in the Amur Region’s Arkharinsky District in late January. Though the tiger could hardly move and was extremely weak, it tried to attack the inspectors when they tried to immobilize it. According to Deputy Director of the Khingansk Reserve Vyacheslav Kastrikin, who participated in the rescue operation, the tiger was injured while hunting a wild boar. Until recently, the animal had been kept in Blagoveshchensk under the supervision of veterinarians. The decision was taken to move the tiger to the safari park in the Primorye Territory for rehabilitation.

“The tiger arrived on Thursday afternoon, but it has not come out of the cage in which it was transported. It is scared, which is normal: it was a stressful ride, and there were so many people around. It will likely come out of the cage closer to night,” Mr Mezentsev said. The cage is located near a shelter prepared for the tiger. It may walk around at night and enter the shelter, or come back to the cage. The cage is a good shelter for the tiger: it is roomy, and the park’s employees lined it with straw.

“The tiger definitely ate on Tuesday morning. It was given meat while being transported, but it is difficult to say whether the animal ate it. Now it has to adapt, and later we will feed it,” Mr Mezentsev said.
