A representative of the Utyos rehabilitation centre for wild animals in the Khabarovsk Territory said that a female tiger cub caught in Primorye underwent an operation on an injured paw at the centre.

"The tiger cub was exhausted when she was admitted to the centre. It was a female tiger cub of six or seven months. She was caught near the village of Svetlogorye and named Svetlaya after the village," the centre's representative said.

The tiger cub had a wound on her wrist. Judging by the soft tissue damage, the wound was inflicted by a homemade trap with metal teeth used by poachers.

To help the tigress, experts of the centre operated on her wounded wrist under a local anesthetic. They put 15 stitches on the inside and 12 stitches on the outside of her paw.

"During the examination the tigress was diagnosed with pneumonia. She was placed in warm premises where she will remain till the end of winter. Vets have prescribed a course of medicines and vitamins for her," the centre's representative said. He added that it will take her no less than a year to recover completely. She will receive vitamins and immunomodulators during this time. Now she is feeling normal. She has a good appetite and steps on the injured paw while walking.
