Experts in the Primorye Territory are trying to wean tigers away from hunting dogs

1 March 2013

A representative of the territorial department on protection, control and regulation of fauna said that game managers in the Primorye Territory shoot in the air to scare off the Amur tiger who killed several dogs near a village in the suburbs of Ussuriysk.

"As far as we know this adult tiger has already killed four dogs. People are largely to blame for this – unleashed dogs were running around the outskirts of the village and the tiger was tempted to see how they taste. Having done so, the tiger went to the village of Yakonovka and killed a chained dog," he explained.

The head of the conflict group of the department that deals with problematic Red Book predators went to the site of the incident to scare the tiger away from the village.

"Experts of the conflict group shot in the air for two days near the village of Yakonovka to scare the tiger away. They expect it to be frightened by the shots, move deep into the forest and continue hunting wild animals. "If this does not work and the tiger comes back, we'll think of something else," the representative of the department said.

He specified that according to a decision of the Rosprirodnadzor environmental watchdog, experts may take other measures to scare off the tiger. They can catch it and send it to another district of the Primorye Territory that would be far removed from populated localities. "This is a healthy adult tiger. He can hunt by himself and we hope he will. Our experts are watching him," the representative of the department said.
