Game managers unable to rescue trapped Amur tiger

A representative of the territorial department on the protection and regulation of fauna said that game managers and researchers in the Shkotovsky District of the Primorye Territory caught a young Amur tiger, about three years old. "The tiger was caught near the village of Mnogoudobnoye. Our experts found his tracks, which were covered with blood. They tracked him for two days. He appeared to have a trap on his paw. The tiger was extremely exhausted. He was barely moving and was unable to hunt," the department representative said.

He said that vets were called upon to catch the tiger and take care of him. They immobilised him, removed the trap and performed an operation on his paw, which went well. They had to cut off one phalange. The tiger was sent to the rehabilitation centre at the Ussuriysk reserve. After the effect of anesthetics wore off, the tiger was given a piece of meat, which he ate. Then the tiger unexpectedly died. The vets performed a post-mortem examination and took samples that will be transferred to labs for detailed analysis. Experts will determine what caused the tiger's death.
