New biological reserve to help save tiger population

New biological reserve to help save tiger population

19 October 2012

A new biological reserve, the Sredneussuriisky Reserve, has been established in the Primorye Territory to help preserve the Amur tiger population. Primorye Territory Governor Vladimir Miklushevsky signed the resolution on establishing the reserve.Under a special forest-use programme established in the reserve, it is expressly forbidden to fell trees there. Forest-protection measures are the only exception.

Officials at the forestry department of the Primorye Territory noted that the establishment of the reserve and the shutdown of a local nut-production zone will help preserve the Amur tiger population.

The 72,200 hectare reserve is an environmentally friendly corridor linking the tiger population in the Russian part of the tiger's natural habitat with a limited tiger population in China's Vandashan Mountains. The tigers migrate from country to country via the Sredneussuriisky Reserve along a 70-kilometre canyon. The reserve is in the Pozharsky District of the Primorye Territory. A small section of the reserve is linked with the Dalnerechensky District.

The Call of the Tiger, Udege Legend, and Land of the Leopard National Parks have been established in the Primorye Territory over the past few years. These national parks also help save the tiger population now roaming the Ussuri taiga.
