On a Russian reserve, a wounded tiger is fitted with a tracking collar and nursed back to health

15 May 2011

Personnel at the Leopardovy Russian wildlife reserve found and treated a wounded tiger before releasing it back into the wild with a satellite tracking device.

Presumably injured in a fight with another animal, the 200-kg male tiger was captured on the reserve on May 15, 2011. The staff then performed a series of medical tests and disinfected its wounds.

The tiger was fitted with a satellite tracking collar so that researchers can survey its future movements as part of a programme to preserve endangered wildlife. The Leopardovy reserve is involved in a tiger conservation project currently run by the Russian Academy of Sciences' Institute of Ecology and Evolution.
