Sailyugem: The Land of Steppe and Mountains

Sailyugem: The Land of Steppe and Mountains

21 June 2016

On June 20, Sailyugemsky National Park presented a documentary, Sailyugem: The Land of Steppe and Mountains, the second part of a popular science cycle about the park. The documentary, directed and filmed by Ivan Usanov, was created by the national park’s employees and Irbis studio, with government support.

The series Sailyugem: The Land of Steppe and Mountains describes the flora and fauna of the Sailyugem and Ulandryk clusters. Professional landscape footage alternates with trail camera images of rare local animal and bird species, and is accompanied by music and ethnic vocals by Urmat Yntayev. Videos of snow leopard from a bird’s eye view, which were first captured in the Altai Mountains, are of particular interest.

Some time ago, the reserve’s experts discovered that there were several groups of snow leopards numbering 40 in the Kosh-Agachsky District, in the Argut River basin. Some snow leopards travel to the Sailyugem Ridge, which is home to the two parts of the national park, Sailyugem and Ulandryk. Images of a large male snow leopard named Khan and of a female snow leopard with cubs born in 2015 were captured here.
