Snow Leopard preservation forum held in a Siberian village

5 June 2014

An environmental forum devoted to snow leopard preservation took place on 1-5 June in the village of Shushenskoye in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, as part of the My Snow Leopard international wildlife festival, an annual event sponsored by the Russian Geographical Society.

The five-day event featured discussion clubs, art exhibits, thematic productions and concerts.

On 5 June, World Environmental Day, participants presented their research papers and studies on the snow leopard. More than 20 projects were sent to the jury from Russia, Kazakhstan and the United States. Nine of them were selected for presentation. Their authors told the audience about the various aspects of studying the biology and ecology of the snow leopard and the challenges to preserving it, as well as ways of raising awareness about this rare species. All the presenters received certificates and memorable gifts from the organisers.

The My Snow Leopard festival was organised by the Sayano-Shushensky state biosphere and nature reserve, Khakassky state nature reserve, and the Krasnoyarsk regional public movement Ravnovesiye, and supported by the Khakassian branch of the Russian Geographical Society.
