Female polar bear rescued in Krasnoyarsk Territory

6 September 2022

A seriously wounded polar bear was discovered in the town of Dikson. The animal has been transported from Dikson to Norilsk, where Moscow specialists and Rosprirodnadzor (Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources) employees will provide care, the press service of the Krasnoyarsk Territory Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Management reported.

The ministry received a request to assist in rescuing the polar bear a few days ago. Its employees left for Dikson immediately. The immobilised predator was found near residential buildings.

According to Krasnoyarsk Territory Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Management Pavel Borzykh, the federal authorities, in this case Rosprirodnadzor, are responsible for managing the polar bear population.

“However, now we are talking about saving an animal, so we're working together,” he said.

It turns out that the polar bear is a young female, about three years old and weighing 50–60 kg. A wound was found near her shoulder blade. The bear could only move her head and front paws.

“Thorough examination at the Moscow Zoo hospital is necessary. We will know more in the coming days,” said Ilya Mordvintsev, leading research fellow of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Ecology and Evolution.

Rosprirodnadzor has sent letters to the Prosecutor General's Office, the Investigative Committee and the Ministry of the Interior so that the authorities can take the appropriate action.
