Russian Arctic National Park to receive funding for studying and filming polar bears

10 June 2020

Russian Arctic National Park will receive two grants from the Russian Geographical Society to conduct field work and film a documentary about polar bears. Russian Arctic is included in the list of winners of the Russian Geographical Society grants for 2020, the press service of the national park reports.

Funding will be provided for field work in Novaya Zemlya, the southern part of the national park.

The second grant will go towards filming a documentary, The Polar Bear's Corner. The project will show how the polar bear is monitored in this protected area today and how the endangered beast was studied in the 1960s.

It is worth mentioning that this is the first time the national park has received a Russian Geographical Society media grant. The project presentations also took place online for the first time. The Russian Arctic team presented a synopsis of the future film.

Russian Arctic National Park is preparing for the field season now. In spite of logistical problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the park administration has said it is ready to send employees into the field to complete the state assignment.
