International polar bear conference to be held in Chukotka

18 August 2017

On the initiative of Governor of Chukotka Autonomous Area Roman Kopin, the region will host an international applied research conference and a meeting of the Polar Bear Commission, the Chukotka government’s press service said.

The initiative was supported by Amirkhan Amirkhanov, Deputy Head of the Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources and commissioner for the polar bear. He believes issues should be tackled where the polar bear lives and where specialists are available who have the required information.

Mr Amirkhanov noted that they plan to include in the dialogue as many interested parties as possible, including representatives of the global community, hunters, reindeer herders, and sea hunters. Specialists must be involved in the process, he emphasised.
