Polar bear cub finds a new home at the Moscow Zoo

A lonely polar bear cub that was found in late August in Chukotka Autonomous Area will find a home at the Moscow Zoo, said Viktor Nikiforov, head of the Marine Mammal Council’s human-predator conflict programme.

In late August, a polar bear, about 8 months old, was found near the village of Ryrkaypiy, Chukotka Autonomous Area. Local residents believe the cub’s mother was killed by poachers.

“Moscow Zoo experts went to Ryrkaypiy and took the bear cub to the Moscow Zoo nursery near Volokolamsk by military planes and helicopters via Anadyr,” Mr Nikiforov said.

He also said that another female bear with two cubs and two male bears were spotted not far from the village near Cape Kozhevnikova.
