International Polar Bear Day celebrated on 27 February

27 February 2014

February 27 marks International Polar Bear Day, aimed at drawing public attention to the need for protecting this animal, which plays a significant role in the Arctic ecosystem.

The polar bear is listed in the Red Data Book of Russia. Melting ice in the Arctic, soil and water pollution, and poaching may reduce the polar bear population by two-thirds as soon as by 2050.
