Sayano-Shushensky Biosphere Reserve has put out new videos of snow leopards

11 September 2023

New videos about the life of snow leopards were produced during the Snow Leopard Frontier expedition. In 2022, a female snow leopard brought to Sayano-Shushensky Biosphere Reserve from Tajikistan had her second litter of three cubs. Observations and the images received from camera traps revealed that there were two males and one female cub in the litter.

"The snow leopard family has begun to walk much further. The cubs are busily exploring the reserve's territory under the supervision of their mother. Young leopards still play and run around a lot, despite the fact that they are almost adults," said Roman Afanasyev, head of the reserve’s research department.

In a few months, the snow leopard cubs will become independent. They will be able to forage for food, find shelter and make paths without their mother, who has been teaching them the rules of forest life for over a year.

The Snow Leopard Frontier expedition is carrying out observations to study the snow leopard, large-scale work to ensure the safety of the rare animal's habitat within the reserve's boundaries and in neighbouring areas, as well as environmental and educational activities.
