Snow Leopard Trail gets new signs

20 June 2022

Employees of the Sayano-Shushensky Biosphere Reserve have updated the Snow Leopard Trail environmental and educational route ahead the new tourist season. The trail is located near the southern ranger station of Shugur and was opened in 2016.

The Snow Leopard Trail is a walking route with scenic viewpoints and interpretive signs about the landscape diversity, animals and plants in the reserve, and the snow leopard. This year, new information was added about the unique experiment in 2018-2019 to relocate snow leopards to the Sayano-Shushensky Biosphere Reserve. The experiment was conducted as part of the Snow Leopard: A Living Symbol of the Western Sayan Mountains federal programme aimed at restoring the population of snow leopards in the Sayano-Shushensky Biosphere Reserve.

The Snow Leopard Trail was developed by a team of experts including employees of the Sayano-Shushensky Biosphere Reserve and the Khakassky Nature Reserve, as well as representatives of the Khakassia branch of the Russian Geographical Society.
