Camera traps reconfigured in Sayano-Shushensky Biosphere Reserve

11 February 2021

Scientists at the Sayano-Shushensky Biosphere Reserve have been carrying out maintenance work on automatic cameras for two weeks. They replaced batteries and memory cards in each of the 70 plus camera traps installed in the reserve and collected the footage for further research.

The Sayano-Shushensky Biosphere Reserve Reserve is difficult to reach: in the summer, specialists get to the sites where they are working by boat, while in the winter, they use hovercraft and snowmobiles. But the cameras need to function continuously, so maintenance is carried out in any weather.

The camera traps have been used in the Sayano-Shushensky reserve since 2007. Automatic photo and video equipment helps in the study of the animal world; pictures of secretive members of the local animal community, in particular snow leopards, are of particular value.
