First research expedition of 2021 starts at Sayano-Shushensky Reserve

20 January 2021

Employees of the research department at the Sayano-Shushensky Reserve have begun field work. Participants in this year’s first expedition, including representatives from the Khakassia branch of the Russian Geographical Society, will be working with camera traps. Cold weather can be hard on camera trap batteries, and it is difficult to replace them in the hard-to-reach areas of the nature reserve.

In the winter, experts also adjust the trail camera locations if necessary. They use animal tracks in the snow to help find a good spot for the camera traps.

The researchers will spend over two weeks in the protected area fixing camera traps and retrieving new valuable images of the nature reserve inhabitants.

Trail cameras have been used in the Sayano-Shushensky Reserve since 2007, providing scientists with unique photos for over 10 years. Camera traps give people a glimpse into the amazing primeval nature of the reserve and the everyday life of its inhabitants.
