Snow leopard cubs born in the Sayano-Shushensky Biosphere Reserve

The female snow leopard released in the Sayano-Shushensky Biosphere Reserve in 2019 has given birth. During a planned research expedition, reserve employees retrieved camera trap photos of grown-up cubs and their mother. This year, after the mating season was over, the female was not spotted by camera traps for a long time, which led the scientists to suspect the possibility of offspring.

The trail camera photos helped assess the cubs' condition and age. The images also showed that the camera aroused the cubs' interest: they played with it and eventually knocked it out of order.

In 2018-2019, two snow leopards from Tajikistan were released in the Sayano-Shushensky Biosphere Reserve as part of the programme The Snow Leopard: A Living Symbol of the Western Sayan Mountains. The offspring prove that the snow leopards have assimilated to their new home.
