Over 60 snow leopards in Russia get “digital passports”

The online database of all known snow leopards now includes digital records of 63 wild cats inhabiting Russian territory. The database contains information from camera traps and identifies a predator by its spot pattern.

In December 2017, snow leopard specialists from Altai, Tyva and Buryatia were trained to operate the Snow Leopard single database to be able to add new records. They then updated the database with accumulated archive materials from trail cameras and the results of the latest field research.

Russia is home to 46-50 snow leopards: 30 in the Republic of Altai, 8-9 in Tyva and the rest in Buryatia.
