Seminar on GIS monitoring takes place in Altai

22 December 2017

Sailyugem National Park has hosted a seminar on the use of the Geographic Information System (GIS) in monitoring the snow leopard population.

The seminar was held in the village of Souzga in Altai’s Maima District. The seminar aimed at giving experts the skills to create complex electronic mapping projects. They will be able to effectively plan field routes and distribute motion-sensor cameras in the area. The use of modern technologies in research will provide faster and simpler data analysis, make the experts’ work more graphic, allow for efficient and fast data exchange and help estimate the efficiency of snow leopard conservation. The common approach to the snow leopard count and data collection and analysis will make the received data comparable and reliable.

Experts in snow leopard conservation from the Altai-Sayan Region, namely from Sailyugem National Park, the Altai Biosphere Reserve and the Ubsunur Hollow Biosphere Reserve (Republic of Tyva), took part in the seminar.
