International Snow Leopard Day marked in Sayano-Shushensky Biosphere Reserve

25 October 2016

On 24 October, employees at the Sayano-Shushensky Biosphere Reserve invited school students to take part in an event to mark International Snow Leopard Day. The event programme featured a tour of the reserve’s visitor centre, a quiz and a workshop in making snow leopard figurines.

Students learned about the biosphere reserve’s activity, as well as the protection and preservation of snow leopards and other animals inhabiting the reserve, such as Siberian ibex, musk deer, Pallas's cat, and lynx.

Children were invited to take part in the "Your Own Game" quiz devoted to the life of snow leopards and their habitat. The event concluded with a workshop where students made snow leopard figurines from salt dough and made up stories about them.

This year, International Snow Leopard Day was celebrated in many cities of the Altai-Sayan region, as well as in the Sayano-Shushensky Biosphere Reserve, the Khakassky, Tigireksky and Altaisky nature reserves, Ergaki Nature Park, and others.

International Snow Leopard Day was established in 2013 at the Global Snow Leopard Conservation Forum in Bishkek by representatives of the 13 countries that are home to the snow leopard. The endangered snow leopard is listed in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. There are about 7,000 snow leopards in the world, with just some 100 of them living in Russia.
