Snow leopard population in the Ak-Cholushpa reserve is on the rise

10 May 2016

Camera traps in the Ak-Cholushpa Nature Reserve in the Altai Territory have captured images of four snow leopards: a male, a female and two cubs. Earlier, a young male snow leopard was spotted by cameras in Ak-Cholushpa. The images confirm information based on snow leopard tracking.

The video materials were obtained in March during a large-scale snow leopard count organised in cooperation with the Moscow-based Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution at the Russian Academy of Sciences. In addition, Ak-Cholushpa experts counted around 250 wild goats, the main prey for snow leopards, in the Kalbakay cluster, one of the three clusters of the Ak-Cholushpa reserve, adjacent to the area of the same name.

The presence of cubs indicates that there are comfortable living conditions in the reserve, which is safe and abounds in prey for snow leopards, and for their population growth.

Snow leopard monitoring in Ak-Cholushpa has been conducted since March 2015.
