International Snow Leopard Day

26 October 2014

Events marking International Snow Leopard Day were held in Khakassia and the Krasnoyarsk Territory on 23 October.

In Khakassia, a representative of the regional branch of the Russian Geographical Society and the Khakassky Reserve, as well as students of Katanov State University went to Abakan’s Elementary School No. 14 to teach children fun facts about the snow leopard and other rare animals. In addition, the kids were invited to colour snow leopard drawings to make them into fun fairy-tale characters. In closing, the pupils were shown a film, The Snow Leopards of the Sayano-Shushensky Reserve.

A class on snow leopards was held at Secondary School No.50 in the town of Abaza, where second- through fourth-year pupils participating in the Nature project learned new facts about the life and behaviour of the snow leopard and its habitat. The children were shown pictures of snow leopards taken by camera traps, and were shown a real camera trap and told how it works.

Celebrations were also held in the village of Shushenskoye, where students, schoolchildren, librarians and teachers participated in educational games, leopard-related contests, sightseeing tours and workshops. The winners were presented with certificates and prizes from the Sayano-Shushensky Nature Reserve and the Khakassian republican branch of the Russian Geographical Society.
