The release included articles written by participants of the first All-Russia Scientific Seminar of Postgraduates and Young Scientists, Strategies for Studying and Protecting Rare and Endangered Large Mammals, which took place in the Khakassian Nature Reserve from 30 July to 2 August with the support of the Russian Geographical Society and the Government of the Republic of Khakassia.

The seminar brought together representatives of specially protected areas and environmental protection organisations from Moscow, Sochi, the Primorye and Krasnoryask territories, the Voronezh and Tver regions, the republics of Buryatia and Khakassia, and other regions. Participants shared their experiences about the studies and protection of rare and endangered species of large mammals in Russia.

The published collection concerns, in particular, studies of the Amur tiger, the Persian leopard, the polar bear, and the population of the Siberian ibex, which serves as the main food source of the snow leopard. The articles also focus on modern research and data-processing methods that can be used in the laboratory and in the field, in particular, on the use of trail cameras and sound traps.

The collection will be used by a range of environmental protection professionals, national park and reserve employees, teachers, and university and school students.
