The Ministry of Natural Resources increases penalties for poaching of endangered species

1 April 2013

According to an order of the Ministry of Natural Resources, the rates for calculating the damage caused by the poaching of species on the Red List of Endangered Species have been increased, starting from March 31, 2013.

The rates for calculating damage caused by poaching has been increased for the following endangered species listed by experts: the golden eagle, gyrfalcon, saker falcon, peregrine falcon, polar bear, Siberian tiger, leopard, snow leopard, European bison, Mongolian gazelle, Himalayan goral, wild goat, Altai argali, and subspecies of the Siberian bighorn sheep. In particular, the calculated damage caused by the poaching of the snow leopard has been increased from 300,000 to 1.1 million roubles.

Increasing the rates for calculating the damage caused to species on the Red List of Endangered Species is designed to significantly increase the financial risks for players in the shadow wildlife market, prevent the illegal hunting of endangered species and reduce poaching. Offenders will now have to pay substantially higher compensation for damage in addition to the penalties stipulated by the law.
