On November 30, 2012, a conference on the results of grant activity for the Russian Geographical Society in 2010-2011 took place at its headquarters in St. Petersburg. The results of 48 grants from Russia and from the regions were presented at the conference.
The conference touched on preserving natural heritage, including the snow leopard and the Przhevalski’s horse, animals close to extinction. The "In the Footsteps of the Snow Leopard" grant resulted in the establishment of the Pozarym federal nature preserve. "We had very ambitious goals — to create a nature preserve," said Irina Sannikova, Chairman of the Khakassia regional branch of the Russian Geographical Society. "Now the reserve is a natural area where wild cats can give birth, a cat's home as we call it."
The participants included teachers, scientists and representatives from different goal-oriented organisations, information agencies and publishing houses from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Irkutsk, Saratov, Saransk, Orenburg, Ryazan, Abakan, Arkhangelsk and other Russian cities. According to Nikolai Kasimov, First Vice President of the Russian Geographical Society, it is planned to hold meetings on the results of the grant activity once every two years.
