Environmentalists: White wales from Srednyaya Bay may be released into natural habitats after rehabilitation

26 February 2019

According to experts of the Marine Mammal Council (MMC), rehabilitation of white and killer whales that are kept in the coastal Srednyaya Bay will make it possible not only to release many of these sea mammals into their natural habitat but also to collect material for an important scientific study on working with these mammals, which will subsequently be analysed and incorporated in recommendations for the future.

Experts believe that for the rehabilitation of white and killer whales and their release into their natural habitat it is necessary today primarily to change the conditions of their upkeep: substantially increasing the number of pools and their size in order to give them an opportunity to swim freely and maintain their natural form; improving insulation and ensure the heating of pools; making sure that the temperature in them remains above zero round the clock regardless of the weather; and monitoring the quality of water and regularly cleaning pools.

MMC experts noted that there has been positive experience around the world of white and killer whales adapting to conditions in the wild even after long-term captivity. This makes it possible to hope for the successful release of these mammals into the wild provided their rehabilitation is supervised by qualified experts with practical experience in this kind of work.
