Scientists mull returning white whales from Srednyaya Bay to the wild

30 November 2018

Scientists at the Pacific Oceanological Institute are studying 90 white whales and 12 killer whales kept in the coastal Srednyaya Bay, and deciding whether it is possible to return them to their natural habitat.

All 90 white whales kept in Srednyaya Bay have not reached the age of puberty, and 13 of them are less than a year old.

According to the experts, qualified zoologists and veterinarians should perform a full examination of the whales before their release into the wild.

If any whales are not capable of independent feeding, they should undergo the necessary treatment and rehabilitation as recommended, and only after that, make their return to the wild. To monitor the whales’ movements at sea, it is recommended to attach satellite tags to the animals.
