In February 2017, Tagging, a documentary filmed during an expedition to Shokalsky Island, will be screened as part of the fourth Russia’s Primeval Nature festival.
The expedition was conducted by the Marine Mammal Council in partnership with the Gydansky State Nature Reserve. One of the objectives was to study white whales and ringed seals, which indicate the state of the ecosystem in the southwestern part of the Kara Sea.
The best result of the studies was tagging a white whale and a ringed seal with satellite transmitters. Migration and seasonal distribution of these species in the Russian Arctic remain poorly studied.
