In late February, the editorial staff of the FSB magazine Pogranichnik (Border Guard), one of the oldest military periodicals in Russia, joined the Leopard Keeper programme of Land of the Leopard National Park. They have chosen a very unusual name for female Far Eastern Leopard Leo 121F, Granitsa (Border).

The name chosen by the magazine, which provides environmental education assistance to the national park, symbolises cooperation between the park and border guard units in the Primorye Territory. The magazine often publishes information designed to raise public awareness about poaching and the importance of protecting the unique local wildlife.

“The local border guards and the national park have been cooperating for years. Over a third of the park’s territory is located in the border zone. This cooperation is based on coordinated plans, which include joint exercises aimed at identifying and apprehending poachers,” said the magazine’s chief editor, Alexander Myasnikov.

Some of the other participants in the Leopard Keeper programme include Special Presidential Representative for Environmental Protection, Ecology and Transport Sergei Ivanov, Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District Yury Trutnev, actors Steven Seagal and Pamela Anderson, television presenter Nikolai Drozdov, the radio and television company VGTRK, the Komsomolskaya Pravda Publishers, Gazprombank and Rosatom Corporation.
